Backbone Issue Sync (now Work Sync) alternatives — and what changed after the rename

In March 2025, K15t renamed Backbone Issue Sync for Jira to Backbone Work Sync. Nothing broke — but a rename is a natural moment to re-check what you're paying and what else exists.

What actually changed in the rename

Functionally, nothing. K15t announced the new name in March 2025 to align with Atlassian's own terminology change from "issues" to "work items" in Jira Cloud. Existing syncs, configurations, and licenses carried over unchanged. If you search the Atlassian Marketplace today you'll find it under the new name; older documentation and blog posts still say "Backbone Issue Sync."

How Backbone bills — and when that's fine

Backbone Work Sync is a Marketplace app, so it uses Atlassian's per-user billing: the price follows the total user count of your Jira instance, starting around $5/month for a site with up to 10 users (as published July 2026). For a small site syncing with another small site, that's cheap and the in-Jira configuration is convenient. On a 200-seat instance, you're paying for 200 seats of sync whether or not those people care about it — and a Jira-to-Jira setup typically needs the app licensed on both instances, or a remote license for the side you can't install on.

Backbone remains a solid choice when both organizations are comfortable installing a Marketplace app, when one side is Jira Data Center (remote licensing covers it), and when you want configuration living inside Jira's admin UI.

Where Ticketize fits

Ticketize approaches the problem from outside the Marketplace: nothing installs into either Jira. You authorize both sites with Atlassian OAuth from app.ticketize.it, pair two projects, and map fields in a visual wizard. Pricing is flat — $3 to $29 a month per workspace — decoupled from how many seats your Jira has. Bidirectional sync, comments, attachments, and conflict handling via the Sync Inbox ship on every paid plan, and migration mode adopts the mirrors your previous tool already created.

The honest caveat: Ticketize is Jira Cloud only. If either side of your sync runs Jira Data Center, Backbone Work Sync and Exalate are the tools to shortlist — that's their ground, not ours.

Evaluating a switch: a five-step checklist

  1. Compute your real monthly cost. Per-user billing means your price is your instance's seat count times the app's per-user tier — on both instances if both run the app. A number that looked fine at 10 seats reads differently at 150.
  2. Check your deployment. Any Data Center on either side rules out Cloud-only tools including Ticketize; compare Backbone against Exalate and Getint instead.
  3. Inventory the existing mirror pairs. Whatever you switch to must adopt them, not recreate them. Ticketize's migration mode proposes detected pairs in the Sync Inbox before the rule ever writes a ticket.
  4. Trial on a sandbox pair first. Every tool here has a free trial or free tier; run one real project pair for a week and watch how status transitions and conflicts behave against your actual workflows.
  5. Plan the cutover as one afternoon. Pause the old tool's sync for the pair, adopt the pairings, enable the new rule. Doing it pair-by-pair keeps the blast radius of any surprise to one project.
Did the rename change Backbone's functionality?

No. K15t renamed Backbone Issue Sync to Backbone Work Sync in March 2025 to follow Atlassian's shift from "issues" to "work items" in Jira Cloud. Existing syncs and configurations continue unchanged — it's the same product under a new name.

Does Backbone Work Sync's price depend on my user count?

Yes. Like most Marketplace apps it uses Atlassian's per-user billing: the subscription is priced on the total number of users on your Jira instance, starting around $5/month for a site of up to 10 users and scaling with every seat — including people who never touch the sync.

Can Ticketize adopt mirrors created by Backbone?

Yes. Migration mode scans both projects for existing mirror pairs left by a previous sync tool and proposes them in the Sync Inbox for adoption; anything it can't match automatically can be paired by hand there. No duplicates on cutover.

Is there a free Jira-to-Jira sync tool?

Yes — Deviniti's Issue Sync Lite is genuinely free on the Atlassian Marketplace, and Ticketize has a free-forever tier (1 rule, 50 mirrored tickets a month). For paid depth, see the full 2026 cost breakdown.

Re-evaluating after the rename?

If both sides are Jira Cloud, try the flat-price route: OAuth in, map fields, and let migration mode adopt your existing mirrors.
